Well-hidden in a privately owned forest in the vicinity of the Walloon city of Namur some traces were found of an impressive example of Belgian military architecture a number of years ago: Le fort Saint-Héribert.
Until quite recently the fortress that was built at the end of the 19th century and that served both during the First and the Second World War was completely covered in detritus and overgrown by nature. Thanks to the efforts of Emile Legros it is now once again accessible and is gradually revealing its historic secrets.
Thanks to the foundation that manages the fortress and the non-profit organisation Lieux Communs, artists of all sorts are now given the opportunity to occupy the fortress over the course of one week-end.
On September 10th and 11th, 2022 four artists from the Ghent region (Flanders) will be artistically invading the military structures. They are Anna Burvenich, Céline Geeraert, Thanh Long Lam and Kim Vandaele. Their aim is to put on display work that is inspired by the fortress itself, by its history, and by the various intriguing rooms that still contain so many traces and relics of what life once must have been like for the soldiers manning the fortress.
Each artist has chosen specific rooms, places… in which he or she wishes to leave a trace as well and this by means of a creation that is, at the same time, very personal but reflects the emotional impact of and inspiration generated by the location.

Bien cachés dans une forêt privée, situés dans les environs de Namur, les vestiges d’un site militaire belge tout à fait unique ont été redécouverts voici quelques années : le Fort Saint-Héribert.
Longtemps, la forteresse qui date de la fin du 19e siècle et qui a servi lors de la Grande Guerre et de la seconde guerre mondiale était complètement envahie de détritus de toutes sortes, d’arbres et de buissons. Depuis peu, grâce à la Fondation Emile Legros, le fort est de nouveau accessible et a commencé à révéler peu à peu ses secrets historiques.
Grâce à la collaboration entre la Fondation qui s’occupe du maintien du fort et l’asbl Lieux-Communs, qui organise des expositions d’art contemporain, des artistes reçoivent, de mai à septembre, l’opportunité d’occuper le fort pendant un week-end.
Les 10 et 11 septembre 2022, quatre artistes de la région Gantoise vont s’approprier la structure militaire : Anna Burvenich, Céline Geeraert, Thanh Long Lam et Kim Vandaele.
Sous le titre “Invasion” ils veulent mettre en relation des œuvres inspirées par le fort, par son histoire et par les chambres très particulières où l’on trouve encore tant de traces et de reliques de la vie des soldats qui ont occupé le fort.
Chaque artiste a choisi des endroits, des chambres… où il (ou elle) veut laisser ses propres traces en présentant une création qui est à la fois très personnelle mais reflète aussi l’impact émotionnel et l’inspiration apportée par ce lieu très spécial.Au cours de ce week-end, vous pouvez non seulement venir voir les œuvres d’art mais aussi réserver une visite guidée du fort.
