In het Frans betekent s’exposer: zich blootgeven.

Een tentoonstelling wordt ook wel eens expositie genoemd en inderdaad kunstenaars geven zich bloot, ze laten iets zien/horen.

Niet alleen in de beeldende kunsten maar ook op toneel, film, muziek, dans, opera, voordracht,… het is een confrontatie met de toeschouwer of de toehoorder.

David Hockney verwoorde dit ontzettend krachtig:

“What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something,

because of course art is about sharing. You couldn’t be an artist unless you

wanted to share an experience, a thought.”
